Improvisation for the Stage with WIT! Winter 2014 edition
This course has already happened! But it will happen again.
Improvisation for the stage runs for eight weeks two or three times a year, and is particularly aimed at people who have completed WIT’s introductory course, Level 1 The Joy of Improvisation, which we run through the Wellington Community Education Centre 4 times a year, or those with previous experience of improv. On March 27th a special expeditionary force of WITsters broke out of Wellington and ventured up the coast to the Kapiti Junction Brewery Bar for a night of frolicsome improv fun.
2014 Comedy Festival – Return to the Planet
The show is over, but it was a fine ride to the outer reaches of the improv universe.

Fringe Festival 2014
Yay for the Fringe Festival, the 2014 edition was amazing, and huge congrats to WIT’s Co-Creative Director Jennifer O’Sullivan, who was awarded Spirit of the Fringe! As well as two wholly WIT shows Return to Sender and Battle of WITs, WIT people branched out into solo and creative endeavors all over town. Just a sample: Jen ran the Fringe at the Gryphon venue and appeared in own late-night improv show (and many others). Lyndon Hood pulled together audience-cast Shakespeare covering comedy, history and tragedy. Christine Brooks gave sage advice as Soap character Mackenzie Morgan, and did Literally Anything while part of duo Brooks and Brown. Darryn Woods was a “brilliantly embittered” McDuff in the Scottish Play in the Botanic Gardens.

Micetro is a raucous evening of spontaneity that mixes beloved improv games, charismatic humility, and audience suggestions to create a unique night of entertainment that will never be seen again. Catch a mix of Wellington’s best loved improvisors plus WIT’s newest recruits as they face off in this gladiatorial contest!

The Improv Lounge

About The Improv Lounge – Storyland for Grownups.
Much of the year The Improv Lounge is where WIT goes to play on Wednesdays, in a casual cabaret-style set up at the Fringe Bar. Show time is 8pm, with $10 door sales.
Some weeks there’ll be two short shows, other weeks one show, or one show and a general improv jam. With an ever changing line up of improvisors and shows, the Improv Lounge presents spontaneous storytelling that is sometimes serious, often hilarious and always totally unpredictable.

Phil Anderson
Phil’s first exposure to improvisation was during the last millennium, via high-school theatre sports in Christchurch. He returned to the art over a decade later (during a friend and fellow-improvisers birthday dinner at an Indian restaurant) and signed up for the WIT beginner’s class the next morning.
Phil was a regular performer with WIT in Micetro, Improv Lounge and Christmas Cracker shows in 2012/13, and in Return to Sender and Battle of WIT’s during Fringe Festival 2014, he has served on the WIT Committee as a Co-Creative Director, and is an acknowledged master of the stylish velour jacket.
In real life Phil is a professional banking-regulator, amateur cricketer, and unpaid servant to an enormous Labrador-Newfoundland cross. Currently “offshore” we hope he’ll bring his acknowledged velour-skills back to these shores soon

2014 – Return to Sender, Fringe
Set in the Dead Letter Office, where undeliverable letters are stored and filed, never to be read, until now. Postal workers read the letters inspiring fellow improvisers to create scenes, stories and characters reflecting the spirit of these words.

2014 – Battle of WITs, Fringe
Wellington’s best loved community improv troupe is back with another glorious season of Battle of WITs, and this time you can see it for FREE! The Wellington Improvisation Troupe (WIT) want to share the love with their hometown. All the Sunday evenings of this Fringe Festival come on down to the Fringe Bar and watch teams of intrepid improvisors battle it out to be crowned the champions.
Original theatre will be made up on the spot by tireless teams formed from a frothy mix of
Wellington’s leading improvisers and some courageously adorable newcomers. Choose your favourites, and help them soar to victory on a tide of audience approval.
Director Geoff Simmons promises that each night will be an evening of spur-of-the-moment storytelling and glorious failure. He explains that improv is “sometimes serious and frequently hilarious, either way I promise each night be a show that no one has ever seen before – or ever will again”. So, grab a drink and enjoy an unrepeatable blend of improvised games, tales, songs and shenanigans.
This Fringe Festival there are no tickets on sale for Battle of WITs. There may be a hat handed round, but just ignore it if you don’t have money, or don’t have fun.
